VPIX Medical Demonstrates Clinical Value of ‘cCeLL’ Through Publications in International Journals
2026-08-19
VPIX Medical has demonstrated the clinical value of its real-time cancer diagnostic solution through publications in international academic journals.
VPIX Medical announced on May 6 that research papers demonstrating the clinical performance of its real-time digital biopsy platform, cCeLL, have been published in leading international journals.
VPIX Medical is a medical device company that develops and manufactures cCeLL, a digital biopsy platform that provides real-time, cellular-level imaging of target lesions during cancer surgery. The platform helps clinicians assess the presence of residual cancer during surgery and supports clinical decision-making. The company currently offers three product lines optimized for surgical environments.
One of the studies, published in npj Digital Medicine (Impact Factor 15.1, based on 2024 data), part of the Nature Portfolio, reported the results of a multicenter confirmatory clinical study involving major Korean hospitals, including Korea University Anam Hospital, Seoul National University Hospital, Samsung Medical Center, and SMG-SNU Boramae Medical Center.
According to the study, the introduction of the cCeLL system reduced pathology turnaround time from more than 20 minutes to approximately five minutes, improving diagnostic efficiency by fourfold. An artificial intelligence (AI) model based on the Swin Transformer, developed by Professor Hyunseok Seo and his research team at Korea University, achieved 94% accuracy in an independent diagnostic performance evaluation. The Swin Transformer is an image-processing architecture based on shifted windows.
Another study, published in JNS Case Lessons, reported the findings of a collaborative research team led by Professor Chul-Kee Park of the Department of Neurosurgery at Seoul National University Hospital. The study examined the clinical application of cCeLL - In vivo during actual brain tumor surgery.
The research team presented a workflow for assessing tumor margins in real time during surgery. Using cCeLL, the team successfully detected microscopic residual cancer cells that were difficult to identify using conventional fluorescence-guided surgery alone. Professor Jae-Kyung Won of the Department of Pathology at Seoul National University Hospital, who participated in the study, clinically validated the diagnostic accuracy of cCeLL images.
Building on these achievements, VPIX Medical plans to accelerate the commercialization of its technology. The company is currently conducting multicenter In vivo clinical studies in collaboration with several university hospitals and is also preparing for regulatory approval of its validated AI diagnostic model.
Kyungmin Hwang, CEO of VPIX Medical, said, “These consecutive publications demonstrate that cCeLL can serve as an essential solution for significantly reducing diagnostic time and improving accuracy in the operating room.”
He added, “We will continue to advance our AI technology and expand global clinical studies to lead the real-time digital biopsy market.”
The research was also selected by the Biological Research Information Center (BRIC) as an outstanding publication in a journal with an Impact Factor (IF) of 10 or higher. As a result, corresponding authors Professors Shin-Hyuk Kang, Chul-Kee Park, and Doo-Sik Kong, along with first authors Professors Yoon Hwan Byun and Hyunseok Seo, were featured in BRIC’s “Hanbitsa” program, which recognizes outstanding Korean researchers for publications in leading international journals.
